Science unit test : les forces

Students have been learning to identify and describe different forces and their effects.

For the unit test on the 1st Feb, students are encouraged to review the handouts in their science book.

They have to know 7 different forces
1. La grativé
2. La force naturelle (comme le vent,  le temblement de terre,  le tsunami, etc.)
3. La force musculaire (la force de notre corps)
4. La force électrostatique (l'électricité qui n'est pas en mouvement)
5. La friction
6. Le magnétisme
7. La flottabilité.

They have to know which type of force each one is (push or pull).

They have to identify 6 different effects of force.
1. Faire bouger (make things move).
2. Ralentir (slow down something in motion)
3. Accélérer (make things in  motion go faster)
4. Arrêter (stop  things in motion)
5. Changer la direction (change the direction of something in motion)
6. Changer la forme (change the shape of something)

They have to be able to name examples of forces and their effects in everyday life.

Thank you for your support.

Oral presentation expectations

"Ma vie en sac" - My life in a bag
Oral presentation

Students have to bring 3 objects that represent their life. Students often have difficulties understanding what "represent" means. To  help understand this better, we have done some brainstorming on the bag, drawing objects and activities they like, their family origin/traditions/celebrations, favourite places, etc. Students must choose the  objects
- with which they can make meaningful personal connection.
- that are small enough to fit in the bag given (7.5" x 4.5" x 15")
- if it is something too big or not appropriate to bring to school (things they might lose or break), they can make a little drawing on a piece of paper and bring it instead.

Here are the success criteria that we have built together for the presentation.

Knowledge & Understanding
-  Sentences used are rich and varied (less repetition, use knowledge of complex sentences with adjectives, adverbs, etc.)
- Sentences make sense.

Thinking
- All three items were brought to the presentation.
- Length of the presentation is about 2 minutes.
- Shows evidence of planning and practice.

Communication
- The volume is appropriate.
- Makes eye contact with the audience.
- Speak fluently so that the presentation flows at an appropriate rhythm.

Application
- Clear introduction and closure as studied in class.
- Uses learned language structures and vocabulary specific to oral presentation.
- Makes meaningful personal connection to the objects.

December

Winter has arrived at Roméo Dallaire! Students had a lot of fun playing during the recess despite the cold weather due to a generous amount of snowfall we had in December. We continue to remind students that the snow stays on the ground and no snow related toys should be brought to school (i.e. snow ball making tool) for everyone's safety.

1. In Math...
We have finished our patterning unit in which we learned to describe, extend, and create a variety of numeric patterns and geometric patterns.

Students using different types of pasta and legumes to make different patterns using their knowledge of attributes.
And this activity was extended to visual arts. Students created an artwork including different patterns using the same materials and describe their patterns in writing.

Students using the Chromebooks to create their own design on a grid pattern.
Students have also built towers using marshmallow and toothpicks and solved a patterning problem using a problem-solving model and a table.

The patterning unit was concluded with a final test which has been graded and sent home. We got to also start our following unit on data management. Before the break, we started to learn to organize categorical or discrete primary data and display the data using Venn diagram with two and three circles. This was introduced using attribute blocks.

2. In Literacy and Drama...
To conclude our series of activities for bullying prevention, we wrote a short script of a simple comic strip and did a tableau activity to show our understanding of all the learned concepts on the topic. The assessment will be sent home in January.

3. In Visual Arts...
We have created a snow eating child art using pastel and cotton balls. It decorated our hallway for the month of December.

To continue to create art using a variety of materials, we also created mini hat ornaments using toilet paper rolls and yarns.

January newsletter and even calendar will be sent home on the first day back to school.

Hope everyone had a relaxing winter break. Thank you everyone for your continued support.
